Firstly, know why you’re learning Spanish. Make sure you have a crystal clear understanding of why you are learning Spanish - it might be to pass an exam for a job application or promotion, to be able to speak well enough to go on holiday to Spain in a month, or to be able to talk with your Spanish girlfriend. Most students don’t have a very clear picture in their heads as to why they are learning, which they can head towards and measure their improvement by. Just by knowing where you are heading you will learn much faster, and with greater ease. Make the effort to do this even though it sounds obvious.
Secondly, turn your reason into a quantifiable goal. If you want to achieve fluency in Spanish for a job application, find out which official exam is required as proof of your fluency. Then study exactly what the exam requires you to know. If you want to learn Spanish so that you can get by on holiday in Spain when you go in one month, think carefully about what language you will need exactly, and don’t spend time on anything else - focus on the practical language that will be useful to you (restaurant language, emergency language, etc). Or set yourself a goal to be able to speak in Spanish alone for an entire day or an entire week.
Now that you know a solid goal to head towards, your mind will naturally focus a lot more during lessons, and pick up the language rapidly that you need to achieve that goal. When your subconcious mind has been given a solid goal to aim for, it absorbs information twice as fast that will help it get there.
Thirdly, you should create real time pressure for yourself. For example, set the exam for six months. And make sure that you are going to take that exam in 6 months no matter what. Promise to yourself that on your holiday you will talk to no English-speakers for a week. Tell a friend who speaks good Spanish that in one month you will spend a whole day speaking only Spanish with them, no matter what. Make sure that they hold you to it.
This pressure will focus your mind wonderfully during classes. You will notice that you learn so much faster than your fellow students who don’t have a good reason, goal or any kind of pressure like you do!

Frouthly, make sure you carefully consider your options for exactly how you will take your Spanish lessons. It’s actually not always best to learn Spanish in a classroom with other students. in a classroom the pace of learning inevitably slows down to the speed of the slowest students, and the attention of the teacher is split between ten or twenty students.
Of course, the best way to learn Spanish is to go and stay for a while in a Spanish-speaking country. The next best way is to find yourself a high-quality home-study Spanish course (there are many very good ones out there today) and study at your own pace, making sure that you follow step 5. Step 5 - Get in at the deep end! Most students don’t take this step, even though it’s the most important step of all if you really want to learn Spanish rapidly to a high level. It is to find a native Spanish Speaker who will meet with you regularly to have conversation at their normal talking speed and in their normal accent. Talk with a native speaker regularly and you will progress beautifully. And very, very rapidly.
Most students will never take this step. People go to hundreds of Spanish classes but never once expose them selves to real, native-spoken Spanish, and then have real trouble understanding anyone when they need to use the language. Make sure you’re not one of them!
