If you’re going to learn Spanish in Detroit there are two routes you can take: you can go to one of the city’s Spanish schools or you can study using a good quality home-study Spanish course.

These are three of Detroit’s better Spanish schools: Language Trainers (1-866-85-54646) www.languagetrainers.com, Detroit Spanish School www.detroitspanishschool.com, Marygrove College (313 927-1363) www.marygrove.edu.

But home study courses have become increasingly popular in Detroit over recent years as they are cheaper and more convenient to learn from – with a home study course you can learn in your own comfort and your own time, you can study at home or in your car, and you save the time it takes to travel across Detroit to a class 2 or 3 times a week.

A problem many students encounter in Spanish classes in Detroit is that the pace of learning always slows down to the pace of the slowest students, which is unfair on the other students but can’t be helped unless the school kicks out all the students who can’t keep up (which not many schools are going to do!). Also in a classroom the teacher’s attention is divided between yourself and 10 or 20 other students.

If you look into home-study courses but still think classroom-based lessons are for you, make sure that you ask them beforehand how much individual attention students get, and how fast lessons progress at. If you’re not entirely happy with their answers, try a different Detroit school.
