Are formal or informal greetings the key to fast learn Spanish?

In North America the Spanish people are far less formal than their Latin America Spanish speaking neighbors.

To say hola or hello when seeing a person you know is quite acceptable behavior. Your best move would be to use a much more formal greeting however, if you are meeting a person for the 1st time.

Buenos dias - Good morning.
Buenas tardes - Good afternoon.
Buenas noches - Good evening.

One thing you’ll hear a lot in Latin America, and maybe the politest thing to do, would be to follow up the greeting with a formal title.

Buenos dias, senor - Good morning, sir.
Buenos dias, senora - Good morning, ma’am.

If you are greeting 2 or more people.

It’s expected that when you meet more than one person, in Latin America , you should greet everyone individually. This means a lot of double kissing with the opposite sex, and hand shaking quite a bit also.

It is considered politeness to ask how people are doing. You would say como esta usted - how are you? to complete strangers and como estas, to friends and other people you know. Como literally means how. And estas translates as are you or you are.
