Reverse Dictionary - Ever asked yourself “Whats the word for…”

I simply happened to find a fairly fascinating tool today.

I used to be attempting to find a word for “Folks that are behind the days” for my previous blog post. I did a couple of searches in Google without avail and eventually started scouring for a tool that did a reverse lookup on a word. A tool where I’d give the definition, and it might offer me some words that matched that definition. What I discovered was Onelook.com’s Reverse Dictionary.

Reverse Dictionaries enable you to “Describe an idea” so as to find words that match that description.

Cool Stuff, particularly for all people non-harvard graduates.

What I realize the most interesting though is all of the uses for this tool. It is really a very sensible search engine. You would be suprized the kind of answers you’ll get from asking a variety of questions. Here are some of potential applications that OneLook describes:

- Notice a word, when you recognize its definition, [or a portion of the definition].
- Explore connected concepts. Baseball, clouds, cities.
- Generate an inventory of words in some category. I.E. Massive Birds, Inexperienced fruit, Canadian authors.
- Answer basic indentification questions. What’s the capital of Vietnam, Who is huge birds friend on Sesame Street. What is the longest River in the world

In actuality Onelook is indexing a lot of more then just dictionaries to find these answers. They index encyclopedia’s and other reference sites as well.

I dont recognize about you guys, but if I had a terribly large amount of money, I might contemplate trying to shop for their technology. There are a lot of times I would like the major search engines may do a number of the things that they are. Ask.com (askjeeves) will a number of this, however you cant get lists from Raise, its typically websites that come up that need you to sift through many pages to search out your answers.

For all of you content mongers out there, this sort of technology might feed some very attention-grabbing sites.
