Spanish in NY
Friday, July 31st, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedNY is a great place to study Spanish – the city is home to a huge Spanish speaking community, quite a few million from the 44 million native Spanish speakers in the USA. You won’t have to go far to practise, and that is one of the most important factors you’ll find when you start learning – getting real practise in with a native speaker. A few reputable places to practise are Spanish NYC (www.spanishNYC.com), A Spanish Journey (www.aspanishjourney.com) or Spanish Black Belt (www.spanishblackbelt.com).
There a few ways you can go about learning Spanish in NY. One option is of course to go to shared classes in one of NY’s many Spanish academies, the second option is to find a an online home-study Spanish course.
Many students have found that in New York’s classroom-based Spanish lessons, the time and attention the Spanish teachers have to focus on you personally is reduced because their attention is divided between 10 or 20 other students. Also, classes inevitably slow down to the pace of the slowest students, which could be unfair on students who want to study at a faster pace. This situation is unfortunately unavoidably in NY’s Spanish academies as teachers have an obligation to give as much attention to each student as they need, and slower students need more attention.
So if you opt for a Spanish school in NY to study your Spanish in, make sure that you choose a school which has a strict policy of keeping classes going at a good speed, which means making sure students study hard and removing any that don’t attend or can’t keep up.
Your second option is to study from a good Spanish home-study course. There are many good Spanish academies in NY, but there are also many excellent home-study Spanish courses available today. The home-study courses save you money and time travelling to and from classes, as you can learn in the comfort of your own home. You can study in your living room, or even listin to lessons on the way to work!

However you decide to learn, NY’s a great place to learn Spanish in because it has a large and growing native Spanish-speaking community. Because of the size of NY’s Spanish community these days you shouldn’t find it too hard to discover yourself a native Spanish speaking conversation partner to practise with (a recommended extra step if you want to rapidly become accustomed to having conversations with native Spanish speakers).
And of course, a result of the growing number of Spanish speakers in NY is that employers are increasingly looking for employees who could speak Spanish. So if you are looking for a new job, or to improve your prospects of promotion, giving yourself the skill of Spanish will greatly help your prospects in NY’s tough job market today.
You’ll find most of the Spanish you come across is be Puerto Rican Spanish – NY has the largest Puerto Rican population outside of Puerto Rico. This is a good thing as Puerto Rican Spanish is one of the most elegant Spanish accents there is, and has a very clear and easy to understand, flowing rhythm to it. But of course people from every Spanish-speaking country under the sun live in this great city.
