Why You Should Study A Foreign Language
Sunday, August 23rd, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedWith the recent technology advances we have witnessed in the past couple of years, we are being introduced to new software and websites that are committed to foreign languages. Why would you think about this? After all, why would you want to study a foreign language anyway ? I have only listed a small portion of the benefits here. I’m sure you could think of some positives yourself.
Traveling Purposes
Have you ever noticed that planning to do something can be just as thrilling as doing it? Being able to speak another foreign language makes the trip moving by allowing you to speak out loud while you submerge yourself with the foreign culture . And by practicing the phrases and sentences you want to learn , you prevent yourself from becoming frustrated when you actually arrive there.
Relatives
Everyone has a family and every family has a story . Everyone always wants to learn about their past ancestors. After all, they do share our DNA. It doesn’t matter if you want to simply write them a letter or actually go travel to visit them. It’s a completely new journey when you learn a foreign language.
Knowledgeable about your native language
You start to pay more attention to certain things when you study to speak a second language. You can’t help but catch on to certain style aspects. Then what? You suddenly begin to learn more about your own language. A long time ago, one of my teachers told me that learning a foreign language opens up your mind to the English language. He was right . I was suddenly better in English and I also appreciated those distinctive accents.
Job Advancement
An emerging thing among colleges is studying abroad. The students who can speak a language always have the advantage. While they are in school or after graduating , they always end up getting the superiod internships. The big companies and agencies always equate a higher paying job to being multilingual.
Challenge
Maybe you’ve done everything you’ve wanted to do and now you want to try something new .What else is there to do, besides trying to study a second language?
Opera and the appreciation for Poetry and Poems
When transitioned into English, most artistic works aren’t appreciated as much, unlike when they are viewed in their original tongue . This is most evident when you listen to poetry. If poetry is translated into English with a conserved rhyming method, the sense of the poems are mostly altered. By listening to the verses in their original native language, you will allow to appreciate the overall occurance more than before.
Appreciation for Culture
To understand the language, you must first understand the culture. Tell me, what is Liverwurst or Calvados? And how about foreign movies that speak and act a completely different language? Wouldn’t you like to be able to watch something with subtitles - and skip reading them?
Stimulate Your Brain
When considereing the effects learning a language has on your brain, adults and children both can be positively affected. Seniors who try to learn a second language show some sort of improvement , but it takes a longer duration to see the results. I have also read that scientists can accurately say that students are better able to solve tasks and situations when they learn a foreign language because they are more innovative.
Impress your Boyfriend/Girlfriend
In the end – whether you’re male or female - you will make positive signs with your bilingual date by trying to study a foreign language. I don’t know about you, but I’d be impressed if my date was able to speak a second language, especially if it was one of the romance languages.
